The Hulk Retro Grey statue pays tribute to the original, grey version of the Marvel Goliath, as he appeared in The Incredible Hulk series on May 1962, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. In the debut, in fact, Lee chose grey for the character because he wanted a color that did not suggest any particular ethnic group; nevertheless, the colorist Stan Goldberg had problems with the grey coloring, resulting in different shades of grey, and even green, in the issue. Thus, after seeing the first published issue, Lee chose to change the skin color to green. The statue was sculpted by Randy Bowen and Troy McDevitt and released in 2009 with an edition size of 800 samples. It exactly reproduces the sculpt of the Retro Green statue, where the main differences concern the presence of an orange, ripped waistcoat, a slightly different face and the base, here depicting a typical desert and rocky land, embellished with succulent plants, an animal skull and a snake. The base is the same of the Hulk Retro version of the Faux Bronze line and shows very fascinating and vivid colors. The character stays erect in a frontal and aggressive pose which highlights the devastating power of the hero's body: swollen and tense muscles on arms, legs and back, the huge feet firmly planted on the ground and a threatening expression very similar to a true Frankenstein, with a squared chin, the flattened nose on the open mouth and two very protruding eyebrows. The piece is characterized by the excellent chromatic contrast between the background grey color of the figure, the deep blue of the torn jeans and the scraps of the orange-ocher waistcoat, falling down on the hero's trunk with a great naturalness. Note the perfect sculpt of the right, open hand or the shreds of the jeans at the knees level, the creases of the same jeans on the quadriceps, the irregular, black hair and the many locks on the large forehead, the excellent details and coloring of the succulent plants and the rocks on the base and also the sign of Randy Bowen, carved on the heel of the right foot. Like the Retro Green (or also the very similar Red Hulk statue), the quotations of this piece are, in general, remarkable and its availability of collectibles' market is rather poor: a further demonstration of the great appreciation of all fans and the top-quality of this beautiful statue!
